Youth Menstrual Hygiene Management Program
The Youth Menstrual Hygiene Management Program addresses period poverty in Malawi, Africa. Rural Development Partners and Nexus Impacts aim to implement tangible lasting systems across school districts in rural communities. These multi-faceted systems manage menstrual hygiene and health deficits among young girls and women by teaching them sewing skills specifically tailored for creating reusable pads and educating them on sexual health, hygiene, and other relevant topics. Designed around sustainability, the project has a system involving local mother’s groups, and through the establishment of sewing clubs within schools, these local girls and women are fostering independence and systemic support for future generations.

Who We Are
Our little Wellness Centre was initiated in the middle of the pandemic in response to the emerging mental and physical health crises affecting our first responder population. As a Physiotherapist who has spent more than 30 years in this community, Tanja was dismayed by how limited resources were, and how long it took to access them.
She was working for a Brain Health Research centre and seeing all of the new technologies and treatment approaches that rarely made it to the clients they were designed to help. Her dear friend, Dawn Elgin, an Integrated Health Practitioner, was seeing the same thing – limited access to innovation, long wait times, and not enough clinicians. She was herself in recovery from several traumatic car accidents and she had come up against every possible barrier to getting proper care for chronic pain and PTSD. Her husband lovingly nicknamed her his “broken squirrel” as she gathered her energy and made the courageous decision to start her own centre.
Despite the pandemic and all it’s challenges, they teamed up and got to work to recruit a team of skilled, kind, dedicated therapists who understand complex care needs, gave them access to advanced technologies, and Broken Squirrel Wellness was born.
Why We Care
We want to normalize that there are times in our lives when we feel broken, or when we feel like there is a squirrel running around in our chest or in our heads with racing hearts and thoughts. It’s part of being human, and with advances in neuroscience and treatment, it need not stop us from starting anew and creating a life that we’re proud of. In fact, it was from those experiences that Broken Squirrel Wellness came to be.
Mission
To provide comprehensive, innovative, and timely care to first responders and trauma survivors, integrating advanced technologies and compassionate expertise to enhance mental and physical well-being.

To be the leading beacon of hope and healing, breaking barriers and stigma, fostering resilience and recovery in our community and beyond.
