Reusable Menstrual Pads

The Youth Menstrual Hygiene Management Program addresses period poverty in Malawi, Africa. Rural Development Partners and Nexus Impacts aim to implement tangible, lasting systems across school districts in rural communities. These multi-faceted systems manage menstrual hygiene and health deficits among young girls and women by teaching them sewing skills specifically tailored for creating reusable pads and educating them on sexual health, hygiene, and other relevant topics. Designed around sustainability, the project has a system involving local mother’s groups, and through the establishment of sewing clubs within schools, these local girls and women are fostering independence and systemic support for future generations.

Dollar-To-Impact Ratio

The Dollar-to-Impact Ratio (DIR) measures the cost-effectiveness of the Youths Menstrual Hygiene Management Program. It evaluates the financial input against outcomes, including duration of menstrual product access, panties provided, hours of health and sewing education, light meals given, and sewing kits provided. This metric helps optimize spending for maximum impact.

Contextual Challenges

Limited
Resources

Limited resources result in women and young girls going without safe hygienic menstrual products.

Cultural
Hindrances

Menstruation remains a taboo topic riddled with stigmas that result in unnecessary harm to women; often during menstruation, they are perceived as dirty and excluded from activities such as dinner.

Missed
Education

Menstruation is the leading cause of girls missing school in Malawi, Africa.

Limited
Knowledge

The lack of accurate knowledge of the female reproductive system, menstruation, and hygienic practices perpetuates gender disparities.

Program Goals

The Youths Menstrual Management Program is strategized around long-term menstrual independence and impact beyond the direct involvement of Nexus Impacts and Rural Development Partners.

Independent Menstrual Management
Empower women and girls with the knowledge and resources necessary for self-reliant menstrual management.
Women’s Health Education
Provide specialized health education on women's bodies, health rights, and address taboos and stigmas.
Community Involvement
Implement sewing clubs and menstrual education networks in rural communities for lasting change.
